Interning at DMBGC

For my internship for the 2013-2014 school year, I will be at the Don Moyer's Boys and Girls Club located right here in Champaign, IL.  I do know that it is second semester, but my first semester here at DMBGC was a very fun, new, and great learning experience for me.  It also allowed me to even fathom the thought of taking my degree somewhere other than into a high school classroom (gasp)!

So why has this oppurtunity been so great? well, I've got to experience a lot of things that will help me to be a better educator, as well as a professional, regardless of career path I take on.

Because I'm interning at a club for children, I'm obviously around the kids.  My role is to mainly assist and observe during scheduled times.  The kids play a variety of games, complete their homework, and they even get snacks!

However, when I am not helping with the children, I am working on the new Ag program that I will be starting up with my supervisor, Ms. Debarah, this school year.  I have lesson plans and activities planned for the children and we hope to have the kids come out twice a month on saturdays to engage in learning about Ag!

In addition to the Ag Program, the club offers a program every thursday night, that is ran by my supervisor, called SmartGirls.  I help out with this as well.  For about 2 hours, my supervisor and I sit down with a group of high school girls and just talk about everything a growing adolescent girl should know about.  The girls are really engaged and they enjoy the space that has been created for them to discuss these important topics. Last semester as a final for AGED 421, I was able to do a soils lesson in one of our SmartGirls sessions, and the girls enjoyed it!  The boys even saw what was going on and wanted to join!  At the end of the lesson, it felt good to teach a topic and have the students engaged and actually learn something at the end of it.

So with a new semester ahead of me here at the club, I hope to grow and learn even more.  I am excited to see what new things come about from this internship!
