A Successful Close to Our Summer Program at Sauk Village Community Center

After four weeks of fun, we now have to get ready for the school year. Over the past four weeks the kids at the Sauk Village Community Center had the opportunity to learn about numerous aspects of horticulture and even got to experience some interesting critters.

Herb Gardens:
During one of our lessons, the kids got to learn about planting. They were able to get hands on experience while planting their own herb gardens to take home.

Garden Markers:

The kids also learned the importance of labeling the plants in their gardens. They also got to get creative and make their own plant markers with their favorite vegetable on it. (Those who didn't have vegetable gardens chose to draw other plants that were in their gardens.

Insect Petting Zoo:

During our final week, the kids got up close and personal with some interesting insects thanks to the Master Gardeners at the University of Illinois Extension Office (Matteson, IL). Some of the insects included; hissing cockroaches, bess beetles, african millipedes, and blue death feigning beetles.

Along with the insects the kids also got to see a rose-haired tarantula. During the petting zoo they learned about metamophasis, exoskeletons, and parts of an insect.
